When A Child Never Grows Up

Raising children has always created stress and challenges for parents, we can read about many of these stories in the Bible, Cain and Able comes to mind. But perhaps nothing causes more stress, anxiety, worry, and despair than having an adult child who is struggling with personal, financial, or even criminal matters. As a chaplain, I am often overwhelmed by the number of soldiers and employees who are struggling with dysfunctional adult children, many of which are still living at home. My heart breaks because I understand the painful road facing these parents, but I also believe in a redeeming God who can set their children free. The most challenging element for these parents is that their children are no longer children, they are grown adults, at least physically. So there is only so much a parent can do. The book of Proverbs has much to say about children, such as "do not withhold correction from a child" (Proverbs 23:13) and "foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; the rod of correction will drive it far from him" (Proverbs 22:15). Unfortunately, these scriptures are best applied when a child is a child, not when they are 24 or 30 years of age.
If you are a parent of a child such as I described, please consider these words in which God spoke to the prophet Ezekiel "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My Statues, and you will keep My judgments and do them" (Ezekiel 36:26, 27). Even though this scripture was spoken to Israel, these promises have become reality for all who have received Jesus Christ as their King and Savior. Only when the Holy Spirit is dwelling inside of a person, having believed in the blood of Christ for the forgiveness of their sins, will they be able to walk in the ways of the Lord, be cleansed from their past, and be set free from their present bondage.

As a parent, pray intentionally and boldly for your child's salvation, protection from the Satan, and deliverance from the bondage of sin, idleness, and bad decisions. Only the Lord can lift them out of their pit and place them upon firm ground, a foundation built upon Christ. Be patient and let the Lord work. Never give up on them!

Love Worth Fighting For

On Saturday night, Ashley and I attended the Kirk Cameron Love Worth Fighting For Marriage Event at Northside Baptist Church. I would highly recommend it for any couple, to include those who are engaged. The crowd ranged from the newly engaged to those married over 40 years. Christian artist Warren Barfield was also present to sing and lead the worship piece of the event. Kirk provided a solid biblical focus to marriage and told everyone up front that no matter what marriage tips and techniques they learn from the world, its useless without a foundation of Jesus Christ.
I thought I would provide everyone my notes from last night:

-Selfishness is the root of almost all problems in marriage
-Beware of being separate from your wife a lot and doing things separately
-I must be Jesus to my wife and love her as He loved me and the Church
-The point of marriage is not my happiness, but my holiness
-I must be plugged into Christ, for He is the source of power
-A husband and wife must surrender to The Lord
-God has reserved the job of changing my spouse for Himself
-I must be engaged in successful warfare to destroy sin or it will destroy me
-My appetite for sin must be killed and then my desire will grow for The Lord
-The life of following Christ is like going upstream against the world and temptation
-I must wage war against anything that causes me to stumble into sin
-A sign of being a true believer is that there is a battle waging inside of you - Spirit vs. Flesh
-Will power is not enough to overcome sin and temptation, I must rely upon the power of the God that dwells in me. I must channel His energy and seek to delight and please Him in all ways
-We must confess we need help - we must confess to one another
-The problem with failed marriages is with men who do not lead their families
-1 Peter 3:7 - Dwell with your wife with understanding and honor your wife as the weaker vessel - 5 key principles are shared in this verse about marriage
-Romance springs from planning and sacrifice, not from chance or convenience - it cost us something
-Genuine compliments are never wasted
-A little help goes a long way - be willing to work around the house and do my part
-Make deposits into my wife's emotional bank account
-I must always honor my wife above anything else on earth - like a fragile vase
-I must protect my wife physically and emotionally as the weaker vessel
  1) Spend time with my wife
  2) Study my wife - become a student of my wife
  3) Open up to my wife - let her know what is inside of my heart
  4) Never compete with my wife - be her strongest encourager
-I am responsible for the condition of my marriage - it's my responsibility as the husband and leader of my home

Rapture of the Church: Pretribulationism

The most common evangelical view of the rapture of the church is pretribulationism. It simply states that the return of Christ would be in two stages, one for the church at the rapture and the other with His saints to control the world at the close of the seven year tribulation. This means that the church (believers in Christ) or the elect will be absent during the tribulation when things will get nasty. The tribulation is viewed as being the transition from God's dealing primarily with the church to His reestablishing a relationship with His chosen people, Israel.
The scriptural support for pretribulationism is found in many scriptures. First, in Matthews 25:13 where Jesus speaks of the Parable of the 10 Virgins and concludes by telling believers to be alert because they do not know either the day or the hour. Second, just before in Matthew 24:36-39, Jesus states for the first time that just as in the time of Noah, there will be no warning signs. Then in Matthew 24:43, Jesus stated that the coming of the Lord will be like a thief in the night or like the master who returns at an unexpected time (Matthew 24:45-51). The point is that there will be a sudden separation, like two men working in a field or two women will be grinding at the mill and in both cases one will be taken and the other will be left. This is what the rapture will look like. It could occur at any moment. But the most prolific scripture explaining the rapture is 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17. When the words "caught up,"  are used in verse 17, which means "rapturo," a  Latin translation of the Greek word meaning to be taken away or snatched up, we see that this event will happen unexpectedly and in the twinkling of an eye. Which tells us that Paul thought the rapture could happen at any moment.

Ultimately, God will deliver the church from the tribulation. That is the point of the rapture, to deliver the church from the suffering that will come during the tribulation, read Revelation 6-18 to see first hand what will occur during the last three and half years of the tribulation. This is why Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:9 that "God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ" and prior to this in 1 Thessalonians 1:10 that Jesus will rescue us from the coming wrath.

Leave no doubt, the rapture will be a glorious time for the follower of Christ and it could literally occur at any moment.

A Pastor and His Mansion

As many in the Charlotte area and beyond have heard, Pastor Steven Furtick of Elevation Church is building an enormous mansion (16,000 square feet) in the Waxhaw area. To provide you some perspective on just how big Furtick's house is reflect on this. It's larger than James Goodnight's home (wealthiest person in North Carolina) and its equal in size to the largest house in West Virginia, my home state. Let me first say this post is not about judging Furtick or being overly critical of him, I've never met him or been to an Elevation service, but I did hear him say in a recent sermon that his house "is not that great of a house." This is a concerning statement for one very important reason, Furtick has influence over thousands of people. As in my own life, I make plenty of mistakes and need others to use the word of God to correct me and rebuke me. I'm I disappointed that Frutick is building a mansion? Absolutely. Paul told Timothy that "all Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, and for correcting..." The Bible has also provided plenty of instruction of wealth and its use, so let me rebuke Furtick as gently as I can about his desire for fame and fortune. First, God is not interested in Furtick fulfilling his dream for his life, He is interested in Furtick fulfilling His dream. This is true for all followers of Christ. Second, we are commanded to not store up treasures on earth where thieves can break in and steal (Matthew 6:19:21) but in heaven. A mansion is certainly an excessive treasure. Furtick has been blessed so he can bless others for the kingdom of God. Third, half of Jesus parables are about possessions and one out of every six verses in the Gospel is about material possessions. Fourth, Furtick, along with all Christians are commanded to not be of the world. The world seeks to build themselves mansions and their own kingdoms, Christian's are called to build up the Kingdom of God. John wrote in 1 John 2:16 that "Do not love the world or the things that belong to the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. For everything that belongs to the world the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one's lifestyle, is not from the Father, but is from the world."

In summary let me say this. Steven Furtick is a Southern Baptist like myself. I'm grateful so many people are attending Elevation. But as a brother in Christ, I would encourage him this way; put your eyes back on Christ and put to death what belongs to your worldly nature, "to include greed, which is idolatry" (Colossians 3:5). David Platt, a pastor and author I really enjoy and about Furtick's age wrote in his book Radical that Christianity doesn't revolve around catering to ourselves, the central message of Christianity is about abandoning ourselves. Jesus Christ calls all His followers to abandon themselves, not to a life of luxury homes and luxury cars. Christians are to die daily and to deny themselves things the world considers essential. No matter what profit Frutick made from his book, he still doesn't own that money, it belongs to God and is to be spent wisely and primarily for the Kingdom.

Consider the lifestyle of Billy Graham. He could have built a few mansions for his five children and wife Ruth, but he decided to honor God and abandon worldly desires.

United Methodist Pastors Unite for Gay Marriage

In case you haven't heard about this story, let me explain what is going on in Pennsylvania. More than 30 United Methodist pastors from eastern Pennsylvania have agreed to officiate a same sex marriage next month to support another Methodist pastor who married his gay son to another man in 2007. In fact 3 of his 4 children are gay.  Do we live in a fallen world? Yes. But should we be surprised this is occurring inside liberal denominations and churches? No, because Paul and other New Testament writers wrote about sexual immorality, unnatural relations, mental perversions, impure thoughts, and the punishment for practicing such perversions to members of first century churches in their epistles. There were individuals who were engaging in these immoral acts and threatening to corrupt others. These individuals tasted the goodness of Christ but never truly swallowed it, i.e., they were false converts.  In fact, Paul commanded the Corinthian church to flee or "run in terror" from sexual immorality. Paul condemns homosexuality in Romans 1:26-28 because it's condemned in Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13. Its' immoral, whether in thought or action!
Has God delivered some homosexuals over to degrading passions and a worthless mind to do what is morally wrong (Romans 1:26, 28)? Only He knows. Christians must be committed to praying for the salvation and repentance of homosexuals and all who are spiritually lost. But homosexuality is damaging in so many ways, too many to list on this blog post.

What we are seeing is what Solomon wrote in Proverbs 16:25, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death." Whether its homosexuals, murders, drug dealers, liars, cheaters, or pastors who support, applaud, and marry homosexuals. Forgiveness awaits for any who humble themselves and come to the Lord in repentance.

In 2012, the United Methodist church voted 61% against versus 39% in favor of amending their stance on homosexuality as a teaching compatible with Christianity. Nearly 40% of the denomination is in favor! This is concerning not just for Methodists, but for Christianity as a whole.

Pray for the United Methodist church that this homosexual trend of "pro-gay" congregants and liberalism that has crept into the church will be reversed by a conservative and orthodox movement.

Return to Corporate Chaplains and a Jehovah's Witness

By the grace of God I made my return to Corporate Chaplains of America today after being deployed and absent for over 13 months. I spent my day with the employees of the Coca-Cola Regional Operations Center in Monroe and it was perhaps the most enjoyable day I've had since beginning my ministry as a chaplain. For those who read my blog, I would like to thank you and everyone else who so graciously welcomed me back. I was overwhelmed with joy by the gracious comments made by those who missed my presence over the past 13 months. Like every season of life, there were new faces and some that were no longer there, and there was even another good friend who passed away last year. He will be missed by many. I can't wait to see what the Lord has laid before me for the rest of the week. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the warm welcome!

On another note, as I stopped to get gas this morning on my way to Coca-Cola, I was approached by a Jehovah's Witness while I was pumping gas. He asked me "if I would like to know the truth"? Of course wanting to play along I said yes and he handed me a Watchtower brochure. After he started his presentation (since my time was limited) I stopped him to ask about "their bible" the New World Translation. Without going into the whole conversation, let me explain a simple truth about "their bible" and the verse which comes to mind, the words of Peter as he spoke about Paul's inspired letters "there are some things in them hard to understand which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures" (2 Peter 3:16).
As some may not know, for years Jehovah's Witness handed out King James Bibles to their members and then later the American Standard Version. Once they determined that no matter what they did or what Bible translation they used, it was impossible to reconcile their teachings and doctrine with the Bible. So the New World Translation was written and has even been rewritten, advised, twisted, and reinterpreted to adjust to their new doctrines over the past sixty years (this man even told me they had a new and improved version fresh off the press).

After I asked him to explain how Jesus is an angel (a belief they hold) he changed the subject and ended our conversation.

It was truly a blessed day.

A Battle Awaits - Military Chaplaincy

The following article was written by Dr. Albert Mohler, President of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Can chaplains committed to historic biblical Christianity serve in the United States military? That question, though inconceivable to our nation’s founders, is now front and center. And the answer to that question will answer another, even more important question: Can religious liberty survive under America’s new moral order?
The repeal of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, coupled with the Supreme Court’s ruling that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional, set the stage for this crisis. The full normalization of same-sex relationships within the U.S. military is part of the unprecedented moral revolution that is now reshaping American culture at virtually every level.
The crisis in the chaplaincy arrived with these developments. The presenting issue is clear: Can a chaplain committed to historic biblical Christianity remain in military service? Does the normalization of homosexuality require that all members of the military, including chaplains, join the moral revolution, even if doing so requires them to abandon their biblical convictions?
The answer, at least from the advocates of the moral revolution, is that evangelical Christian chaplains must go—and Southern Baptist chaplains must go first.
In recent weeks, the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, the endorsing agency for SBC chaplains, formulated a set of policies on these issues. These policies are required of all SBC-endorsed chaplains, and the guidelines are clear. SBC chaplains are to minister in line with the biblical convictions of the SBC and its churches as made clear in our denomination’s confession of faith, The Baptist Faith & Message. Chaplains are to offer respect to all, respect for the religious liberty of all, and respect for the religious diversity represented within the armed forces. But evangelical chaplains cannot deny or compromise the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As the document states:  ”Responsible pastoral care will seek to offer repentance and forgiveness, help and healing, and restoration through the mercy and grace of Jesus Christ’s sacrificial gift of love on the cross.”
At the same time, SBC endorsed chaplains—the largest single group of non-Catholic chaplains—cannot violate their own convictions by conducting or attending a same-sex marriage ceremony, and they certainly cannot bless such a union. They cannot minister in any context that “would give the appearance of accepting the homosexual lifestyle or sexual wrongdoing.”
In accordance with established U.S. military policy and law, all chaplains are free to minister in accordance with the teachings and beliefs of their own churches, even as they minister to all and respect the religious liberty of others. And yet, the great moral revolution of our times now threatens the continued service of chaplains committed to the moral teachings of historic Christianity.
That point was made abundantly clear in an article published on Monday, September 16, by Associated Baptist Press. The author of the article is Tom Carpenter, identified as co-chair of the Forum on the Military Chaplaincy and an elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Carpenter wastes no time in declaring his argument that Southern Baptist chaplains must immediately resign from military service. Given the guidelines set down by the Southern Baptist Convention’s endorsing agency, “the only honorable course is to resign from the military chaplaincy and return to civilian ministry.”
Carpenter insists:
The North American Mission Board has turned the Army motto on its head. They have forced their endorsed chaplains into the untenable position of either serving God or country. Given that choice, as men (NAMB forbids women to serve as ordained chaplains) of God the only honorable course of action for most will be to resign their commissions and return to civilian ministry.
Carpenter then asserts:
If these Southern Baptist chaplains were civilian pastors, there would be no problem. As civilians, they undisputedly have an absolute First Amendment right to believe, preach and counsel in accordance with their denominational tenets. But they are not civilians, and have a duty to not only God, but also country. It is instructive that they are not salaried by the NAMB but by the American taxpayer.
Yes, and they do not surrender their constitutional guarantee of religious liberty when they accept a commission as a military chaplain. Carpenter’s group was on the forefront of advocating for homosexual rights within the military, calling for “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to be revoked and for the Defense of Marriage Act to be struck down. At the same time, his group assured the nation that this moral revolution would not lead to any major exodus of chaplains from the Armed Services. In fact, they accused evangelicals of “crying wolf” in warning of such a crisis. Now, Carpenter is openly calling for Southern Baptist chaplains to join the moral revolution or get out of the military.
Make no mistake, the moral revolution driven by those who demand the total normalization of homosexuality and same-sex relationships will not stop with the crisis over military chaplains. But at this moment, the chaplains are on the front lines of the great cultural and moral conflict of our times. This is a moment of crisis for the chaplains; but it is also a moment of crisis for the entire nation. If religious liberty is denied to evangelical Christian chaplains in the military, if they must surrender their convictions or their commissions, then religious liberty is lost in America, and the chaplains will be but the first casualties of this loss.
Southern Baptist chaplains have been singled out in this call for mass resignation, but they will not be alone. Thousands of Roman Catholic chaplains are committed by their church to the same moral convictions. Chaplains representing other evangelical churches and denominations will find themselves facing the same moment of decision. Muslim and Jewish chaplains who cannot endorse homosexuality and same-sex marriage will face the same challenge.
In reality, it is the entire nation that now faces this crisis. Is America ready to demand that military chaplains choose between serving God and serving their country? We will soon know the answer to that question.
We will also know the answer to another, even more urgent question: Where will every Christian church stand on this matter? The great theological divide between those churches and denominations committed to biblical Christianity and those who are given over to the spirit of the age has never been more clear. Indeed, the divide grows clearer day by day.
Also clear is this: Southern Baptist chaplains cannot surrender their commitment to Christ in order to maintain their commitment to ministry within the Armed Services. Furthermore, Southern Baptists will take their instruction from their own churches, not from those churches and denominations who are wearing out their knees bowing to Baal.

We Will Reign with Christ

Of the many wonderful gifts given to us by Christ is the opportunity to reign with Him during the millennium. This is hard to imagine, but it's a promise from God. First, Jesus promises His disciples that they would sit on twelve thrones and judge the twelve tribes of Israel (Matthew 19:28). Second, Jesus promises that all who overcome (true believers) will rule His enemies and reign with Him as He judges evil (Revelation 2:26-27). Third, Jesus promises that those who overcome will be given the right to sit with Him on His throne (Revelation 3:21), and finally in Revelation 20:4 Jesus promises that those who will be martyred during the tribulation will reign with Him. Let me summarize this, during the millennium, Christ won't reign alone, Christians will reign with Him. Talk about an honor and privilege!
In light of the constant bad news, greed, religious persecution, crime, "homosexual marriage," abortions, and government shutdowns hope is only found by keeping our eyes on Jesus. Every ruler on the earth during the millennium will be followers of Christ. That means no more political squabbles, no more scandals, nor more lobbying, nor more homosexual marriage licenses, no more abortions, and no more government shutdowns.
Think about this, all of God's saints (all true believers in Christ) from Adam to Christ's second coming will join together to reign with Christ. How about this, Moses, David, Noah, and us serving together in unity with complete righteousness. With God the unbelievable becomes believable!

"If we endure, we will also reign with Him..." - 2 Timothy 2:12

American Family Association...Hate Group?

660-Starnes-AFA-briefing

Christian ministry, the American Family Association, has been labeled as a "Hate Group" by the US Army. The Big A to the left of the screen represents the 1st Army. This comes the week before AFA's Share-athon where they raise money to support their ministry....coincidence, I don't think so.

Please read this article by Todd Starnes.

Several dozen U.S. Army active duty and reserve troops were told last week that the American Family Association, a well-respected Christian ministry, should be classified as a domestic hate group because the group advocates for traditional family values.
The briefing was held at Camp Shelby in Mississippi and listed the AFA alongside domestic hate groups like the Ku Klux Klan, Neo-Nazis, the Black Panthers and the Nation of Islam.
A soldier who attended the briefing contacted me and sent me a photograph of a slide show presentation that listed AFA as a domestic hate group. Under the AFA headline is a photograph of Westboro Baptist Church preacher Fred Phelps holding a sign reading “No special law for f***.”
American Family Association has absolutely no affiliation with the controversial church group known for picketing the funerals of American service members.
“I had to show Americans what our soldiers are now being taught,” said the soldier who asked not to be identified. “I couldn’t just let this one pass.”

Looking for a Blessing

During our trip to Disney World we happened to come across this statue of Buddha inside one of the stores at Epcot's China village. Although not surprising in itself, since nearly 55% of the Chinese population is Buddhist, the money left in the hands of the statue was something I had never seen. So I did a little research and discovered that most likely this money was left by individuals seeking a blessing from Buddha or seeking to earn favor from another god. This is interesting when Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) never taught that he was a god or that he should be worshiped as a god. In fact many modern Buddhist don't believe in God at all. Even more troubling is when one considers they are seeking a blessing from a regular man whose bones are still in the ground. However, as a former Hindu, Buddha believed in millions of finite gods and goddesses. I have found that in America, Christians and churches typically fail to reach out to Buddhists because they don't understand their religion or because of the large amount of publicity given to Muslims around the world, which keeps Islam in the spotlight. But leave no doubt there are over 613 million Buddhists in this world who need Jesus Christ.
My advice is to focus on the gospel message of Jesus Christ when evangelistic encounters present themselves...for it is the message we are saved by!
